GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant for code completion, chat, code review, pull request help, CLI assistance, and agentic development workflows. It is one of the most widely adopted developer AI tools because it works inside popular editors and connects naturally with GitHub repositories, issues, pull requests, and enterprise developer workflows. The product is useful for individual developers, students, freelancers, startup teams, engineering organizations, and enterprises that want AI assistance inside the coding environment. Copilot can suggest code, explain files, generate tests, answer questions about a codebase, help with refactors, and support agent-style work depending on plan and editor support. GitHub now offers multiple Copilot plans for individuals and organizations, including Free, Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise. Higher tiers include more AI credits, broader model access, organization controls, policy management, enterprise security, and deeper GitHub platform integration. The main tradeoff is that Copilot is best when your workflow already lives in GitHub and supported IDEs. It is not a full product manager or no-code app builder, and teams should monitor usage-based billing, model choices, data policies, and AI credit consumption as Copilot becomes more agentic.
